Description:

The New Teacher Project (TNTP) is a national non-profit consulting firm founded to address central education reform challenges facing our public schools, specifically the recruitment and preparation of outstanding new teachers and the creation of school environments that maximize those teachers' impact on student achievement. TNTP partners with universities, school districts, states, and other organizations to improve and enhance their efforts to recruit, select, train and support new teachers.

We are currently seeking a Training & Resource Manager for our Memphis Teaching Fellows program. This position will begin by August 1, 2008.

The Program

TNTP works with Memphis City Schools (MCS) to implement Memphis Teaching Fellows, a high quality alternate route into the classroom for outstanding career changers from a variety of backgrounds who commit to teach in high-need schools. Through a rigorous summer Training Institute, they prepare to begin teaching in classrooms each fall.

Role and Responsibilities

The Training & Resource Manager will be responsible for the successful planning, implementation and evaluation of the 2009 summer Training Institute. In addition, the Training & Resource Manager is responsible for ongoing program administration, which is connecting Fellows in their first or second year of teaching to resources throughout the school year to ensure their success in the classroom.

Program Administration responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Acting as the main contact person for Fellow concerns (instructional and administrative)
• Providing or coordinating classroom observations for Fellows
• Producing and distributing monthly newsletters for the Memphis Teaching Fellows program
• Planning and facilitating regular professional development meetings during the school year
• Recruiting and managing part-time Intervention Specialists
• Identifying development areas for struggling Fellows and developing targeted improvement plans
• Developing structures to ensure that Fellows fulfill our program mission of increasing student achievement
• Ensuring all Fellows are enrolled in and meeting certification requirements either through the district’s credentialing program

Pre-Service Training Institute Responsibilities

Over the summer, new Memphis Teaching Fellows undertake a six-week Training Institute designed to prepare them for teaching in a high-need public school in Memphis. New teachers will benefit from a curriculum with an emphasis on raising student achievement and will attend seminars and workshops on standards, foundations of teaching, and classroom management. Because we are looking for a Training & Resource Manager who can begin work by early August, he or she will have an opportunity to observe the 2008 Training Institute, which begins in mid-June 2008, and then will have primary responsibility for planning and leading the 2009 Training Institute for the next cohort of Memphis Teaching Fellows. For the 2009 Pre-Service Training Institute, the Training & Resource Manager’s specific responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

• Leading hiring, training and managing of MTF training staff
• Customizing and implementing TNTP’s Summer Institute curriculum
• Developing and implementing an operations and communications plan for the Training Institute
• Planning for Training Institute opening and closing ceremonies, including securing speakers, panelists, workshop presenters, etc.
• Assisting with the management of pre-summer Fellow activities like school observations
• Ensuring Fellows meet the objectives of the Training Institute curriculum
• Developing and maintaining relationships with district staff
• Ensuring that each group of participants becomes a well-connected cohort of teachers with a positive culture
• Assessing faculty performance in order to continually improve Training Institute quality

Compensation

The annual salary for this full-time position is $60,000 or commensurate with experience in a similar position. We also offer a motivated team of colleagues, a comprehensive benefits plan effective on the first day of employment – including medical, dental, vision, disability, generous vacation time and a 403(b) plan – as well as the opportunity to impact the direction of a growing, mission-driven company that is committed to the success of our nation’s children.
